With another Mother's Day upon us, I took some time to reflect on my journey as a mother!
I was constantly wondering if I was doing right by these precious souls I chose to bring into the world. I knew in my heart I was doing the best I could, yet, in the solitude of the night, I questioned my choices...to make light of my insecurities as to decisions I made, I always teased..."don't worry, there is a fund for college or therapy whichever comes first" They say children do not come with instructions, yet if you watch and listen, you will hear and see that you must nurture their nature!
Now that my boys are almost finished college (with a little therapy along the way) I feel grateful that they turned out to be happy, confident young men about to embark on their own journey. I realized the toughest part of motherhood for me was not the raising and guiding of these beautiful human beings, it is the "letting go" part of parenting that we all must go through! I am choosing to let go with grace and trust that I have instilled the necessary tools for them to create their best lives!
A small business is quite similar to raising children...it needs to be nurtured, it brings joy as well as tears, it is a labor of love!
As many of you know I created Boutique W 8 years ago when my boys were young teenagers, the Newtown Square store was like my third child! I never imagined there would be more than one store, yet here I am, about to open store number 3!
With the same concerns as my midnight mother musings, I have embarked on a career journey having no idea how it would turn out...of course I had business plans, dreams and visions as to what I wanted it to be! Again, I knew I was doing the best I could! As with child rearing I have applied the same "nurture their nature" philosophy to the stores...each store has a unique personality with it's own wonderful team and customers that make the Boutique W experience special! What will Rehoboth's nature be? Please join us on the ROHO journey! What I do know is with the growth of the stores, my role is changing...to continue finding new and exciting lines and to keep creating the selection and service you have come to love, I now have to apply another lesson learned from parenting...it's time for me to "let go" and be the creative force the stores now need to continue flourishing! For me, not being on the floor all the time with our amazing customers is like asking me not to breathe! Of course I will be in Rehoboth for most of the summer to help establish our culture and philosophy!
I am choosing to let go with grace and trust that I have instilled the necessary tools for my amazing team to create the best lives for the stores!
To all of the women who came before me, who touch my life everyday and the one's I have yet to meet... you have all paved the way for me to be able to live my dream! I thank you...
Happy Mother's Day!
Change happens 4 times a year, whether we are ready for it or not! Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall...
We know it's coming, we try to get ready for the change, new filters in our HVAC systems, switching our closets, planting flowers or pruning back for what's to come! Yet, when the change of seasons does arrive, we are still somewhat surprised, it's too hot, too cold, too dark...you get the idea!
As the seasons change, so do we, whether we like it or not! The difference between the seasons and us, is that we do not know what our change is going to look like! Although in that change we have a choice, fight it or embrace it :)
So how does this relate to fashion? At Boutique W we are committed to supporting you in the changes that come to our bodies by promising we will always be "age positive-body positive"!
We take pride in keeping our styles on trend without being trendy, always age appropriate, interesting and fresh, and we often try new lines!
At the same time we strive to help you step out of your style comfort zones!
What has also changed is advertising and marketing! As a veteran in the independent boutique world, we used to place ads in magazines, send direct mail, announcing what's new and what's
happening...social media has replaced all that and now it's become a challenge to let the world know what's going on within our walls! Not everyone is engaged on social media, so I have decided to use this blog and email platform to keep you in the BW loop! Please take the time to read and share these communications with your friends that you think would enjoy the Boutique W experience!
Boutique W has undergone a lot of changes over the years and here we go again...
We are excited to let you know some of the new lines we are bringing in for Fall!
We have already started carrying Lisette pants, if you haven't tried them on yet, you must stop in and try a pair! In addition to our tried and true collections here are some of the new and exciting lines coming this Fall, some you may recognize, others, you will have to trust us... Michael Stars, Johnny Was, By JJ, Carmen Sol, and what you have been asking us for...SHOES! From All Black, and Superga, just to name a few!
So remember...The only thing we can count on in Life is Change! I hope you choose to embrace it!
My earliest memory of fashion is when I was a little girl staying at my grandparents home at the Jersey shore....I was about 8!
My grandmother was a milliner in NYC and had closets of handmade hats and beaded dresses, bags and of course drawers of jewelry (that was the time when the "grown ups" dressed to the nines to walk the boardwalk in Atlantic City)
My sister and cousins and I would put outfits together and parade around the living room for all the family and friends who were visiting! I think that was the first fashion show I curated, hahaha!
The joy we had finding the right pieces in the treasure chest that was mommom's closet!
Fast forward 48 years and here I am owner and creative director of Boutique W!
My philosophy for Boutique W was that I wanted to create a safe place where women would lift each other up and support each other, where within our walls we are age positive and body positive and work to ensure every women leaves feeling better than when she walked in!
What I didn't realize 8 years ago when I opened the Newtown Square store, was that what I was really searching for was the childlike joy I had playing dress up in my grandmother's closet!
With the addition of the Baltimore store almost 3 years ago, I began to see what was really happening...women (some who claimed they didn't like to shop, can you imagine?) were finding joy, not only in the clothing selections, but in the pampering attention of being wardrobed!
Boutique W has evolved into the ultimate experience of my mommom's closet :)
Women come to us to play dress up!
Soon we are about to expand our journey and open our 3rd location in Rehoboth Beach Delaware this July!
We are also expanding our selection in the stores...we will be carrying shoes this Fall! We have been working tirelessly finding new and exciting lines in clothing and jewelry as well!
I will be writing to you about once a month to keep you updated on what's happening and what's new! After all, without you, there is no Boutique W :)
Let me know if there are any topics you would like discussed...we are in this together!
Spread the joy!
It may not feel like it outside, but spring has sprung! I love spring for so many reasons. After a cold, dreary winter, nothing feels as good as a little sunshine. Not to mention, springtime is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe.
For those of you who don’t love to shop, but want to add a little something to your spring look, all you have to do is ask us for a little help. Our stylists will put looks together for you AND send you home with notes. That way, you won’t have that, “now what does this go with?” moment when you get home from the store.
PS - here are a couple of my favorite looks that are in store now.
When I opened the original Boutique W in Newtown Square, I wanted to create a safe environment for women to shop. A place where women of all ages and all body types were celebrated. Fast forward, we have a beautiful remodeled store in Newtown Square and a new store in Baltimore. That said, our core values are still the same. Boutique W is about empowering women.
As you can imagine, over the past few months, as news broke of so many of our nation’s leaders being accused of being sexual predators I was beside myself. In fact, I’m still processing it. However, I am also more adiment than ever about doing my part to empower women. It is time to take a stand and I urge you to do the same. Boutique W already fosters a body positive, age positive environment. But that is not enough. We need to unite and be there for eachother. So, in the coming months, look out for in-store events that will bring women in our community together.
Together, let's make this year, the year of the woman!
As some of you may already know, my 2017 was quite eventful both personally and professionally. Amongst other things, I settled on a new home, my son Chad was on the Price is Right, our flagship Newtown Square location underwent a renovation, and I saw our latest endeavor “The Gathering Place at Boutique W come to fruition. What a year!
That said, I am a firm believer that positivity breeds positivity. I don’t think any of these amazing things would have happened with a negative attitude. Sure, hard work and a little luck helped too, but at the end of the day, you have to be positive.
So, I challenge you to go into 2018 with a positive attitude. No matter what gets thrown at you, stay positive. And I promise, if you do this one thing, this year will be your best year.
We are constantly inundated with images of holiday perfection. From magazine covers, to our Facebook news feeds, to the morning talk shows - we can’t escape it! And let me tell you, that alone can cause stress. So, my advice to you, this Thanksgiving, don’t strive for perfection. Instead, take some time to practice an attitude of gratitude.
It is so important to say thanks. In the morning, I don’t get out of bed and put my two feet on the ground until I’ve said,” Thank You.” I’ll even get back in bed and have a do over if I forget! It sets the tone for my day.
Now, I understand that a daily gratitude practice might not be for everyone. However, if there is a day to be thankful, it’s Thanksgiving. So this year, on Thanksgiving morning, make a point to say at least one thing that you are grateful for. And remember, it doesn’t have to be a big thing. You could be grateful for the glass of wine you’re going to have with dinner!
I want to thank every single person that made our grand re-opening possible. Especially, you, our amazing Boutique W customers. There is no way we could have done this without your continued support. And, thank you for your patience.
For those of you who attended the opening, or have been to our Newtown Square location since then, I’m sure you noticed something new and exciting in the front of the store - The Gathering Place at Boutique W.
To quote John Lennon, “Life happens while you’re busy making other plans.” Well, that’s how the Gathering Place came about. I was busy planning our remodel, and through a series of events, The Gathering Place came to fruition. The best way to describe this unique space, is to think of it as a place where life meets style and you can expect the unexpected...a modern day salon where positivity is the common thread.
In keeping with this idea, for the first time ever, we will be offering our customers giftware, selling and serving Philly favorite Horn and Hardart coffee, and artist Sara Bleemer will be sharing and selling her art. A part of Sara’s sales will be donated to charity as well. We also hope that you will use the Gathering Place for your community events. And of course, we still have our regular selection of fabulous clothes in store!
We look forward to sharing our journey with you.
